What did you learn from your peer review projects about 1) Writing and Editing in general, and 2) your actual research project, specifically.

I learned more of how to edit others’ papers and how writers have different styles and ways of editing.  Also I saw different styles of writting and approaches which I found was interesting.  I learned where my strengths and weakness in my research process were by receiving multiple types of feedback.

Reflect back on the beginning of this course – your fears, anxieties, worries, etc – and discuss how you turned these into strengths throughout this course this semester. What are your future goals as researchers? As writers? What was your proudest moment in this course? What do you think will most stick with you long after this course?

My fears and anxiety were with how I would accomplish my paper and do all the work.  I turned this into a strength because it forced me to go head on into the paper and mange my time enough to get it all done.  I now know more about research so I will be more familar in the process when I am confronted by it again.  As a writer I plan to take note into how authors get their information and portray since I did it, it will open my eyes to ways authors express their topic. My proudest moment will be when I hear I got and A and walk out of my conference!! The classroom atmoshpere and work that goes into research will be what sicks out in my mind when I think of English 202.

1) What assignment/document was most useful to you during this proces? Explain your answer.  2) What was the most helpful feedback you received at any stage – why was it helpful? 3) What was most difficult for you during the drafting process? Easiest? WHY? 4) Where does your final essay best show your ability as a writer?

My literature review becasue it organized my thoughts and help me really develop the direction of my research.  My most helpful feedback I received was during peer editing because so many eyes looked at my paper.  My most difficult processs was the introduction because we first wrote it and I was totally confident in my research question yet.  My most easy was collecting data becasue I had my questions developed and just had to email them out and wait to hear feedback.  I think my final essay shows strength it my literature review or my results section, not sure if they are but they were the most enjoyable for me to write about.

These sources and looking up additional sources helped to get a better understanding. I had to research from two different sources and hear two different ways that the information can be presented and given which was informative and interesting.  This has helped me to prepare and edit my sections in my paper.

My combined paper creates a cohensive reading experience to my readers because I used transitions and tried to have my information to have a balanced flow of topic and sources.  I didn’t yet have to make any drastic changes, I did do a lot more editing though and plan to do more.  I want more editing done by others, their feedback could help me edit it more myself and I want to see if I am getting my point across.

My research subjects will be male and female college students from IUP.  My participants will vary in ethnicity, social activities, extra curricular activity and as mentioned be for gender.  I plan to   4 roommates, my neighbors and English class to examine my research.  There is no danger for my participants in the research method.  I plan to use a printed survey with about seven questions.  The survey will range from open to close ended questions.

The questions I had were answered in class and by talking to other classmates about their work. Exchanging ideas and gathering perspectives of my ideas is helpful.

Writing up Research; Method and Research Design

  • Ways research is collected and formed
  • Explanation of why specific methods were used
  • Important that Data was collected or generated in a way that is consistent with accepted practice in the field of study
  • The methodology should also discuss the problems of the research and ways to prevent it

This article provided important information about the steps of research.  We also discussed these differnt apsects of the research process in class that clarified what this source was going over. I found it interesting to incorporate the errors of the data collected in the despriction of the methodology.

I liked this article because it numbered the different aspects and broke them down into how they are important.  I also liked that at the end, the article provided tips on ways to write a method section.  Each steps of process was not only explained but also provided examples as well which I found very helpful.

Entry 9

The introductory paragraph article focuses on making a bold entrance into a topic.  Also expressing how important a strong thesis statement is.  The beginning the paper should have a good attention getter maybe incorporating humor or a quotation from a source.  Quotations should be throughout the introduction making it strong by backing up the first parts of the paper.  A main thing I thought was important was to get the reader curious and hook them in order to keep them reading.

Another source: http://www.writing.ucsb.edu/faculty/donelan/intro.html

This source had much different outline than the previous source.  But it went over interesting facts such as; the importance of how the introduction is literally introducing your topic.  It also indicated how the intro should introduce the structure and methodology of the essay.  I found this interesting because the site put things very simply.  Finally it went over the importance of a thesis statement as well.

I found these articles to be informative.  They were presented in different ways and I like seeing the different way things were worded and communicated.  It had similar information but formatted it differently which I liked because it made it a little easy to understand and break down the introduction process.

Rubric Entry 10

Rubric:

We included five categories in our rubric and graded the article on a scale of one to five in each of them.  A rating of one indicates a complete lack of an element of writing, a three is average, and a five indicates that the graders saw little  to no room for improvement.  Our five categories are:

  1. Use of research to support the author’s thesis
  2. Author’s ability to connect to their audience
  3. Author’s use of voice
  4. Author’s use of rhetoric in their argument (ethos, pathos, logos)
  5. Writing conventions.

For the article “Why are killing rampages increasing?”, we gave the following ratings:

  1. Use of research:  2.5.  The author used research in his argument including a graph, but he relied very heavily on a narrow range of sources (specifically the new york times), and on his own authority.  We also think that the way he presented research was misleading, especially in that he implied that his figures were solid and had high external validity when in fact he failed to adjust for population growth as well as relying solely on statistics from one source for over half century of data.
  2. Author’s ability to connect to the audience: 4.  The author used several techniques to pull the audience in and get them on board with his hypothesis, including a provocative attention statement, a visually impressive graph, and appeals to emotion via fear tactics, all in the opening page of his article.
  3. Use of voice: 3.5.  The author’s voice was authoritative.  He starts by presenting his credentials, uses the first person excessively and cites his own work several times.  That said, he did a great job breaking the topic down into layman’s terms and making his work readable for a wide audience range.
  4. Use of rhetoric to support an argument: 4.  The author did a great job presenting himself as an authority as well as engaging the reader on an emotional level.  His only problem in this category was his logical argument.  His appeals to himself make his argument circular, and he is making sweeping generalizations in terms of social theory based on a narrow source of data.
  5. Writing mechanics:  5.  The author’s use of writing conventions, including logical flow as well as proper use of grammar and vocabulary made this article an easy read.

Critically Analyzing Information Sources

This article was informative because the information it provided varied on a wide range of topics associated with analyzing sources.  Some information that stood out to me was how to determine if a book or source is valid before even holding the book in your hand.  I found this interesting because valid sources are very important and to be able to have an idea already of whether it is or nt before reading it is very helpful.  Also another part the article  touched on the subject of analyzing the text. This part of the article focused on how it is helpful to read the preface, skim the index and scanning the bibliography to check for other sources and their validity.

The other article I found focused more on web sources and how to determine the quality of them.  The article suggested looking for information on the qualifications of the author, other sources that were used, how recent, whether or not they are associated with an organization, also whether or not bias are in the article. These are just some of the tips I found very helpful, I elaborated on questions to ask yourself as your evaluating your source and how to go about it.   I also know that looking at sources online it is a good indicator that the website is valid by having the source say; .edu, .org. and .gov.

http://mason.gmu.edu/~montecin/web-eval-sites.htm

My other sources I have used in the past are current with in two years, many of them from this year were updated.  Especially a cite like Owl Purdue, which I find very helpful in understanding aspects of the research paper procedure.  I try again to find sources that end in other way that do not just have .com because often many people can just publish something online that is why being able to know how to elvaluate a source is so important.
